Call for Papers

Dante the Politician, Dante Politicized
Dante Society of America Sponsored Panel
Annual Conference of the American Association for Italian Studies
June 3–5, 2026
Sassari, Italy

Politics played a crucial role in Dante’s biography, which is reflected in his writings through a range of variations and oscillations. However, the reception of Dante has also been often political, with the sommo poeta being recovered, exploited, and at times even ventriloquized to serve the most disparate agendas in any sort of media. This panel aims to foster a dialogue between contributions on Dante as a politician, particularly on his theoretical sources, and contributions on the political uses of Dante. Our purpose is to bring together medievalists and reception scholars to compare different methodologies and tools while approaching Dante in a transhistorical perspective.

Please send a brief abstract (150-200 words) and short bio to Eva Del Soldato ([email protected]) by January 3, 2026. Contributions in Italian and English are equally welcome!

Material Dante: Books, Bodies, and Beyond
2026 Annual Symposium of the Dante Society of America
April 10–11, 2026
Biblioteca Nacional de México, Mexico City

The 2026 Annual Symposium of the Dante Society of America will explore the materiality of Dante: the tangible, visual, and physical dimensions through which his works have circulated, been read, and reimagined across centuries and cultures, as well as the representations of materialities within his texts. Held at the Biblioteca Nacional de México, one of Latin America’s most important repositories of cultural memory, this gathering seeks to foster new conversations on how Dante’s legacy is shaped through books, manuscripts, images, and collections. More details will be shared when available.
